![]() Music has been my passion since childhood. Formal training on guitar,
accordion, organ and piano started at age 5, leading to music recitals and competitions by age 6.
In high school Orchestra there was no place for guitar or any other instrument I already played, but there was plenty demand for cello - so I started on cello my freshman year. By junior year I took first seat, and was occasionally
hired out as part of a quartet that played at various functions. During
this time I was also exploring electronic music.
Bands such as New Order, Alien Sex Fiend, Art of Noise
and Siouxsie and the Banshees just blew me away, and I joined a series
of bands made up of similarly inspired people. The Hail Marys was the most successful of these bands, playing local Chicago clubs with me as
keyboardist.
Later on, I joined the (now-defunct) Garden of Dreams as their keyboardist, adding in the cello soon after. One of our more notable performances was the 1995 Convergence Festival, held in Chicago.
After that I was invited to join black tape for a blue girl as a cellist. I contributed some cello for Remnants of a Deeper Purity and Amplexus: With My Sorrows. Live highlights with them include Projekt Festivals 1996 and 1997, Mexico City 1997, LA Projekt Festival 1998 as well as the 1996 and 1997 US tours.
Oblivia came about in 1998. It was created out of frustration and desire, consisting of music I couldn't easily share with other musicians, yet desperately wanted to express. The debut track, "Nye", was released on Cicatrix: The Ritual Scarring compilation, Vol. 1 from DivaNation Records. The first Oblivia recording was an EP, Spitting Embers, released through DivaNation Records in 1999.
Spitting Embers was first made available at live shows only. It was released in time to coincide with the Blackout AD Tour, in which I was performing on cello and bass guitar with Faith and the Muse. Oblivia later went live, playing a handful of local shows in Chicago. I enlisted the help of Andrew Waggoner, who took on guitar and keyboards while I sang, played cello and keyboards.
Oblivia is currently not performing live. I might choose to take it to the stage again one day, but mainly my live appearances are with Mercurine, a project I formed after moving to Los Angeles a few years ago. Oblivia songs have been used for some independent films and the project continues to be alive in my studio.
